Episode 647: What Actually Turns Freebie Subscribers Into Buyers

client attraction email marketing offers and pricing podcast Oct 19, 2026

Raise your hand if you have ever run a launch that was fine. Not a disaster, but the numbers were not what you expected, so you moved on without knowing why. Danielle Klemm is a conversion strategist who spends her days on exactly that question. In this episode she breaks down what happens after someone downloads your freebie, and how to audit your emails, funnels, and launch without rebuilding everything at once.

About Danielle Klemm

Danielle Klemm is a conversion strategist with nine years in digital marketing, the last seven focused on funnels and what happens after a launch ends. She once ran a six-figure marketing and funnel agency, and she has audited more than 200 lead magnets across courses, services, and digital products. Her Freebie-to-Buyer Gap quiz diagnoses why a growing email list is not turning into sales, and her Opt-in That Pays Off course uses a decision tree to match a lead magnet to the offer, the audience, and the buyer's stage. She also hosts the Per My Last Promo podcast.

Why your freebie gets downloads but not sales

Most lead magnets grow a list without growing sales. Danielle Klemm, a conversion strategist who focuses on funnels and what happens after a launch ends, explains why. A freebie is the first impression someone has of your business. If it does not give them a quick win or move them further along their buyer journey, they land on your list and stay there.

Danielle also treats a launch as a testing ground. She uses launch emails to see which messaging angles land, then changes the top of a sales page or adds a testimonial to the checkout page while the cart is open. When she picks a lead magnet, she starts with the price of the offer, whether the audience is cold or warm, and whether you are their first or fifth solution. From there she shares her three funnel paths, from a quick win for smaller offers to a trust funnel for higher-ticket ones.

When a freebie is not converting, Danielle checks the numbers in order: opt-in rate, how people move through the lead magnet, then the handoff to your email sequence. She covers the freebie that gives so much that buyers feel they no longer need your paid offer, a 60-second test for how much to give away, and why she uses AI to build once the strategy is set. She also shares how she runs her business in a low-capacity season with no-call strategy days.

People usually create lead magnets that grow their audience, but don't create sales for them.

Key takeaways from this episode

  • A quiz completion rate of 50 percent or higher means people want your topic, according to conversion strategist Danielle Klemm.
  • Danielle's own earlier quiz reached only about 20 percent completion because its questions asked for data many business owners did not have, like a Hotjar install or a list of buyer objections.
  • Danielle picks a lead magnet using three factors: the price of the offer, whether the audience is cold or warm, and whether you are the buyer's first or fifth solution.
  • A freebie can be too valuable: when it solves the exact problem in full, buyers can decide they no longer need the paid offer.
  • Offers priced around $1,000 to $10,000 need more than one lead magnet, because buyers want several touchpoints, like replies, DMs, or a call, before they trust you enough to buy.
  • When Danielle gave AI the same client context she had and asked for a lead magnet strategy across 10 client examples, it missed every time, which is why she uses AI to build once the strategy is set.

This episode is for you if

  • You ran a launch that was fine, not a disaster, but the numbers fell short and you moved on without knowing why.
  • Your freebie gets downloads and your email list never buys.
  • You use ChatGPT or Claude to plan your funnel and want to know where AI helps and where it steers you wrong.

Tune in to hear:

  • What a life-first business looks like in a low-capacity season
  • How Danielle's no-call strategy days keep client work moving on her own energy
  • What to test during a launch: messaging, angles, bonuses, and discount pricing
  • How a sales page header change and a checkout page testimonial brought in a sale within the hour
  • Why most lead magnets grow your list but do not create sales
  • How to choose a lead magnet by offer price, audience temperature, and whether you are someone's first or fifth solution
  • Danielle's three funnel paths, from quick win to trust funnel for higher-ticket offers
  • Where to look first when a freebie is not converting, and what a healthy quiz completion rate looks like
  • Why a freebie can be too valuable, and the 60-second test for how much to give away
  • A children's book subscription funnel built around a five-day flight log
  • Why Danielle uses AI to build and not to plan strategy, and why she finds ChatGPT keeps suggesting more tweaks than Claude
  • How to know when your funnel is good enough to stop changing it

I don't like AI for strategy. I love it for execution.

Frequently asked questions

Who is Danielle Klemm?

Danielle Klemm helps course creators and digital product sellers figure out why a launch or freebie missed its numbers. She is a conversion strategist and the creator of the Freebie-to-Buyer Gap quiz and the Opt-in That Pays Off course. In this episode she covers what happens after someone downloads your lead magnet and how to audit your emails and funnels without rebuilding everything at once.

What is the freebie-to-buyer gap?

The freebie-to-buyer gap is the distance between the people who download your freebie and the people who go on to buy from you. Danielle built a short quiz that tells you in about 60 seconds whether you have one. In the episode she points to three common causes: a lead magnet that does not move people further along their buyer journey, a freebie so thorough that buyers feel their problem is already solved, and a weak handoff from the lead magnet to the email sequence. Her advice is to start with your own numbers and your own audience instead of a general benchmark.

How do you choose a lead magnet that leads to sales?

Choose the lead magnet after you know what you are selling. Danielle starts with the price of the offer, whether the audience is mostly cold or warm, and whether you are the buyer's first solution or their fifth. A cold audience on its fifth attempt at a solution has been burned before, so the lead magnet has to do more myth busting and build trust in the concept as well as in you. Smaller offers tend to work with a quick-win freebie, while higher-ticket offers need a lead magnet paired with other touchpoints that build trust.

Where should you look first when a freebie is not converting?

Work through the funnel in order, starting with your opt-in rate on the landing page. Next, look at how people move through the lead magnet itself. For a quiz, Danielle says a completion rate of 50 percent or higher means people want your topic, while her own earlier quiz reached only about 20 percent because its questions asked for data many owners did not have. If the opt-in and completion numbers look healthy, the problem is usually the handoff to your email sequence, or a freebie that gives away so much that the paid offer starts to feel optional.

How much should you give away in a lead magnet?

Give enough for a quick win without leaving the reader feeling the problem is already solved. Danielle checks this with a 60-second test: ask someone to go through your lead magnet and notice their first emotional reaction. A 20-page PDF that feels overwhelming, or a 10-minute video that feels like too much time, tells you a lot about whether you are giving too much. If you cannot ask your own audience, ask someone two degrees away from you, such as a person in a Facebook group or mastermind, for their honest thoughts.

Is AI better for funnel strategy or for building the funnel?

Danielle says AI is better for building than for planning. She tested this by giving AI the same client context she had and asking it for a lead magnet strategy across 10 client examples, and for someone who understands the buyer journey the answers were off every time. Once the strategy was settled, she helped a client prompt Claude to build an assessment, and it was finished faster and looked better than what that client could have made on WordPress. Her advice is to settle the strategy first and bring AI in after that.
