How long does it take to build an email list that performs?
The good news? You don't need a huge number of subscribers to make a big difference in your business. A small list that wants exactly what you're offering is better than a bigger list that isn't committed. And having an email list that performs is hands down the number one way you can automate and duplicate your business to attract your ideal client without sitting at your laptop or staring at your phone all day.
If you've been listening to my pep talks on this subject over on the Crush the Rush Podcast,, you know I call my email list my flying unicorn. It is like a flying unicorn comes into my inbox, does all the things, and then creates this magical community of people - all while I'm working my 9-5 or spending time with my family.
Let's get to the good stuff: how to get your first (or next!) 100 subscribers.
Step 1: Create a compelling lead magnet.
A lead magnet is anything that can provide a quick win for your audience. What can you do to help your audience get to the next level? What are people asking you over and over? What resonates with them? Make sure you do your market research before you dive into creation mode! Ask your audience, what do they need? What would be helpful for them? Ask your current clients about the most helpful advice you’ve given them.
Take that and turn it into a five step guide, video, audio file, PDF. Create something simple and easy to execute that guarantees a win.
Step 2: Launch your lead magnet.
And make it a big deal! So many times you see coaches, teachers, whoever is selling something have a launch for a course or whatever they're doing, but I say, launch your lead magnet! Show the behind-the-scenes work as you create it. Plan a week of content around it. Heck, plan two weeks of content around it, and do a workshop that teaches it. You want people to know you created this thing!
Once it's live you have to talk about it, show yourself using it especially if it's something that you use on a daily basis. Remember only 1% of your social media following actually sees what you're sharing, so it's okay to share it over and over and over again. And most of the time, people need to see or hear a message six to seven times before it clicks. You should feel like a broken record by the time you get done launching it.
Step 3: Present your lead magnet in different ways.
Teach it live, have a five day workshop, do a mini teaching series on your Instagram stories, repurpose it into an Instagram TV, put a video on your blog. Teach snippets of what's in the freebie (and then use that video as a followup in your nurture sequence).
You can relaunch the same lead magnet over and over and over again. Maybe you do it every month with just a little bit of a different twist. Maybe you're pulling out a certain piece of it, or maybe it's a certain time of year so you're focusing on one area. You don't have to always create new things, just put a different spin on it.
Step 4: Follow up.
Do not, I repeat, do NOT leave a dead end after you deliver the freebie. Read more about this here. Deliver so much value that your audience starts to do your job for you - they tell their friends, share your stories, share your videos.
And that’s it, the four steps you need to attract your next 100 (or 1000!) subscribers! Which ones have you heard before? What’s something new you’re going to try?
